Thank You for your interest in our line of small boats. I hope the information enclosed will be of some help in planning your next purchase. First, I would like to tell you a little about our business.
We opened for business in 1987, building cedarstrip canoes. What quickly followed were kayaks, and the restoration of classic wood/canvas canoes and paddlemaking. Since then we have also developed a number of new designs, and offer custom design services and now, patterns for several of our canoes, as well as supplies for the do-it yourselfers (except wood). In 1991 we moved to our present location on Swamp Pike, in Gilbertsville, Pa.
Now on to our boats. Our "Standard" canoes are made of edge glued strips of cedar, bead and coved, covered with 6 oz. fiberglass cloth and epoxy. The trim (seats, thwarts, gunnels and decks) on "Standard" canoes is a mix of ash and mahogany. In any case, we build each custom boat to order, so if you don't mind paying the additional cost of the materials, you can have trim made of any wood that we can get. Other special requirements can also be built in, as long as they are safe, instead of adding them later.
Our strip kayaks are built in the same manner as our canoes, including fiberglass on the hull and decks, and the bulkheads and trim are made of marine plywood. This construction is light, stiff and very strong, besides being beautiful.
In addition to our canoes and kayaks, in 2002 we started building an Adirondack guideboat. These were popular in that region of the country for nearly a century, as the main method of travel, prior to the road system of today.
New from Woodstrip Watercraft based on our favorite small solo open canoes, comes a new series of small decked canoes. Designed to bring the usefulness of the solo canoe to you in a decked version, reminiscent of the Rob Roys and MacGregors of old. Smaller and lighter weight than most, these boats will prove to be the perfect mix for lakes and river paddling, knocking about (with class!), fishing or photography.
Although we are moving from building to order to stocking some basic models, for out of stock and custom boats there is a slight wait. We require a non-refundable deposit of 25% when you place an order, with the balance due at completion.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything regarding a boat or paddle, or anything else, please feel free to call, write or email us, and we will help in anyway we can.Yours,
Alwin R. Bratton
