Some Available Options for Canoes

While we believe that the standard model makes an excellent value as is, we feel there are many ways in which you may wish to customize your canoe. Below are some of the more commonly requested items. At no charge we offer either our standard 20" decks with coamings and brass down the center, or shorter 12" decks.

Stapleless construction: This method prevents all the tiny marks in the hull, from where the staples hold the strips together while gluing. Both methods are equally as strong, but if you really don't like the marks, this is a very slick looking option. Because it takes much longer to do, it does come with a large price tag. $1000.00

Accent strips: This is another way to really dress up your canoe. We are not talking about just using light or dark strips for color variation, those we do at no charge. We are talking about a single strip made up of light and dark woods in a alternating pattern, placed a couple of strips below the gunnels. It's a nice way to show off the shape of the canoe. Pattern planks are preglued before cutting strips. 3-Piece: $100.00; Multi-Piece: $150.00

Extra fiberglass: Some customers, who paddle on very rocky waters, or know they are rough on equipment, have requested an extra layer of 4 oz cloth on the outside, below the waterline of their canoes, for extra protection. It adds a couple of pounds to the overall weight. $75.00

Bulkheads: Fitted under the decks, and sealed in place with epoxy, the bulkheads form watertight compartments in each end. While not necessary, it does allow the canoe to float higher when swamped. Made either of mahogany ply (to match the decks), or strips to match the hull. $90.00

Signature Series: Signed hull, 15" decks, 3 piece accent strip, hand caned seat, and all mahogany trim, as a package. No substitutions. Solos: $125.00; Tandems $200.00

Kneeling thwart: A wide thwart used to rest your rear on when kneeling, in place of a seat in a canoe at no charge, or placed 15" behind, and lower than the yoke, at a slight angle, for soloing a tandem. $25.00

Custom seats: We will, instead of the standard ash seat with machine pressed cane, make a hand caned seat out of the wood of your choice. In some cases exotic woods may cost more. $65.00 ea.

Double paddle conversion: We build all of our solos as either double paddle canoe, with a folding, bottom style seat and a thwart behind it, or as a standard, open style for use with a single blade, with a higher seat. If you would like the ability to convert from one to the other, we offer a conversion kit. It includes the folding bottom seat and the thwart. Converting consists of removing the seat, bolting in the thwart and placing the seat in the bottom of the canoe. Takes less than five minutes! $125.00

Sail rig: For tandems. ACA sail (lateen type), clamp on leeboard thwart w/two leeboards, tiller operated rudder, mast spars, and all hardware. $850.00

Paddles: We make custom hardwood paddles in four styles, as an added touch for your canoe. We will size and fit them at no additional charge. Choose from a variety of woods and shapes. $110.00

Kayaks:

Standard kayaks include Red cedar hulls and decks, covered inside and out with 6 oz. fiberglass, overlapping at the deck seams. In addition, an extra layer of glass tape runs the length of the center seam on the outside of the hull. Also included are a carved foam seat, Footbraces, deck lines, bulkheads, Hatches (choice of two styles) and carry handles.

Some Available Options for Kayaks

The standard kayaks are fitted the way we use them. This consists of red cedar hulls, 6 oz. fiberglass inside and out, hull and deck. A 9.oz tape reinforces the keel seam on the outside. Marine plywood bulkheads and coamings, deck lines, carry toggles, kneepads, carved foam seats and your choice of two styles of hatches. The first is a curved plywood hatch that sits directly on the deck, and thus has no place that water is retained, thus being drier and able to withstand more abuse; and a flush hatch, which is cut form the original deck, reinforced underneath with plywood insets. This looks great, but inasmuch as it is recessed, there is a small space in which water can lay. Deck lines changed to your configuration at no charge. Below are some of the most popular options.

Stapleless construction: Removes the appearance of lines of tiny holes by the staples used to hold the strips together while gluing. This makes a very nice, clean looking kayak, but at a price. The process of clamping each strip takes longer, because you can only do a few at a time, and that means it cost more. $1500.00

Accent Strips: Really fancies up your kayak. Not just different color strips for variation, we do that at no charge. These are single strips made up of light and dark woods in an alternating pattern, placed as either the second strip from the sheer on the hull, or on the deck. It's a nice way to show off the lines of your kayak. Pattern planks are preglued before cutting the strips. 3-Piece: $100.00; Multi-Piece: $150.00

Extra fiberglass: Some, who paddle rough places with their boats, or are generally abusive, request an extra layer of 4 oz. glass on the bottom outside of the kayak. While not necessary, it makes it much better at resisting punctures, at the expense of a couple of pounds. $75.00

Seats: While we offer carved foam at no charge, we will install any seat you prefer at our cost. Inquire.

Backband: While most find the bulkhead pad quite comfortable, others prefer an adjustable backband. These can be added at anytime. $45.00

Sprayskirts: We can supply nylon touring style sprayskirts, with a pouch, made to fit your kayak, by JAG Industries. Some choice in colors. $50.00

Rudder: While we don't recommend rudders, because they teach bad habits, and even the best are prone to breaking exactly when you want them most, we do offer one. We use a Sealine of the highest quality. $325.00

Paddles: We offer some of the lightest, traditional, all wood paddles on the market. Custom sized and made for you. Laminated. In three different styles. Sized to fit on order. $215.00

If you have ideas you would like to pursue as options on your boat, phone to discuss them, and as long as we deem them safe, and workable, we will quote a price.
